As the first permanent settlement west of the Allegheny Mountains, Harrodsburg is rich in tradition and history. Here was the first school in the wilderness, the first practicing physician in Kentucky, the first recorded sermon in the state, and for those that didn't get the message, the first court. Also, the first corn in Kentucky was raised in a field at the east end of Harrodsburg. Harrodsburg was established on June 16, 1774, by Colonel James Harrod. In this bluegrass area, south of the wooded palisades of the Kentucky River, Fort Harrod was erected as a military installation. With the forts built by Daniel Boone, Benjamin Logan and John Floyd, Fort Harrod held this Indian hunting ground for pioneer settlement. Today, a replica recreates our pioneer past as the Mother Town of Kentucky. Travelers approaching the Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill view a scene so timeless, it seems as though an invisible barrier has been constructed to keep out the twentieth century. Rows of neatly stacked stone fences follow the contours of rolling bluegrass farmland, while Black Angus cattle and Border Leicester sheep graze in pastures near the village entrance, oblivious to passing motorists. Within the village, handsome limestone, brick and clapboard buildings stand to either side of a tree-lined road. Once dwellings and workshops, the structures are as sound today as when they were built more than 150 years ago. Their design speaks of the simplicity and integrity, of Shaker builders; people who believed that workmanship should reflect spiritual life.
