Welcome to Charlottesville KOA, the closest campground to Thomas Jefferson's Monticello!  Come camping at our natural, wooded campground, located in central Virginia.  Our campground is surrounded by a rich heritage of history, culture and scenic beauty. Come and see the past come to life! Visit Thomas Jefferson's Monticello or Ash Lawn-Highland, the restored home of James Monroe, 5th president of the US and close friend to Thomas Jefferson or take a look around the Michie Tavern, one of the oldest homesteads in Virginia.

Whatever your vacation plans may be Charlottesville KOA has you covered. We offer RV sites with full hookups for water, electric and sewer. (limited 50 amp service available.) For your camping pleasure we have a separate tent area that's shaded and wooded. Should you desire a sturdy roof over your head we also have our comfortable Kamping Kabins available. Even when you aren't out taking in the sights you will find there is much to do here at Charlottesville KOA. Our refreshing pool is open during the summer months and we also offer a gameroom, playground, fishing pond and a sports field where you can play volleyball, horseshoes, tetherball or basketball.

Welcome to our natural, wooded campground, the closest one to Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello! Here, in central Virginia, you are surrounded by a rich heritage of history, culture and scenic beauty. Enjoy the sights and see the past come to life.

    Take a Trip to a Presidential Estate!

  • MONTICELLO – A visit to the home of Thomas Jefferson, author of the Declaration of Independence and our third president is a must! This 33 room mansion, complete with porticoes and dome, was designed and built by Jefferson over 40 years. Enjoy an audio or guided tour of the house and grounds and see his collections of books and art. Open daily 8:00 am - 5:00 pm from March - October and 9:00 am - 4:30 pm from November - February. Admission is charged. Wheelchair accessible. Located in Charlottesville.
  • ASH LAWN-HIGHLAND – Visit the restored home of James Monroe, the 5th President of the United States! There are tours of the house and gardens, and during the summer a music festival! Groups can arrange to participate in hands-on crafts workshops. Open daily 9:00 am - 6:00 pm April - October and 11:00 am to 5:00 pm November - March. Closed January 1, Thanksgiving Day and December 25th. Admission is charged (Group Rates Available). Located approximately 10 miles east of the campground.
  • JAMES MADISON’S MONTPELIER – The 2,750 acre estate of our fourth president and the “Father of the Constitution” is home to the mansion, formal gardens, a National Landmark Forest and much more. The mansion is currently undergoing restoration to return it to its original appearance. Enjoy an audio tour of the house and grounds as well as exhibits and films. Open daily 9:30 am - 4:30 pm from November - March and 9:30 am - 5:30 pm from April - October. Admission is charged. Located in Montpelier Station, 45 minutes north of Charlottesville.
  • WOODROW WILSON PRESIDENTIAL LIBRARY – Enjoy a visit to the birthplace, museum and library of our 28th president. Take either a guided or self-guided tour and learn about Wilson’s early years and presidency. Walk through the Victorian-style terraced gardens. Open daily; Monday - Saturday, 10:00 am - 4:00 pm; Sunday, 12:00 pm - 4:00 pm from November - February and Monday - Saturday, 9:00 am - 5:00 pm; Sunday, 12:00 pm - 5:00 pm from March - October. Admission is charged. Located in Staunton, 30 miles east of Charlottesville.

    Go to the Tavern, See Stars, or Go Outside!
  • MICHIE TAVERN – Don’t miss a trip to Michie Tavern; this restaurant has been serving homemade southern fare for over 200 years! Step back in time as costumed hosts welcome and serve you. Tour the Inn and its out-buildings as well. Open year round; tours are from 9:00 am - 5:00 pm and the restaurant is open 11:15 am - 3:30 pm from April - October and 11:30 am - 3:00 pm from November - March. Admission is charged. Located near Monticello in Charlottesville.
  • SHENANDOAH NATIONAL PARK – Welcome to “a wilderness oasis in the busy east.” At nearly 196,000 acres, this national park has something for everyone. Enjoy hiking, biking, fishing, horseback riding and much more. Take Skyline Drive and see waterfalls, forests and amazing views. The park is open year round, but Skyline Drive is occasionally closed due to weather. There is an entrance fee. The south end of the park is 25 miles west of Charlottesville.

    Museums…Inside and Out!
  • FRONTIER CULTURE MUSEUM – See the diverse Old World origins of early immigrants to America through outdoor living history museums. There are six exhibits comprised of original farm buildings brought here from Germany, Ireland and England. Learn how people lived in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. Open 7 days a week 9:00 am - 5:00 pm from mid-March - December 1 and 10:00 am - 4:00 pm from December 1 - mid-March. Admission is charged. Handicap accessible, assistance is available. Located in Staunton, 30 miles east of Charlottesville.
  • WALTON’S MOUNTAIN MUSEUM – Fans of Earl Hamner Jr.’s novel will love a trip to the Walton’s Mountain Museum in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. See John Boy’s bedroom, the living room and kitchen and Ike Godsey’s Store. View a documentary, photos and memorabilia. Open daily 10:00 am - 4:00 pm from the first Saturday in March to the last Sunday in November. Admission is charged. Located in Schuyler, 30 miles south of Charlottesville.
  • CIVIL WAR MUSEUM AT THE EXCHANGE HOTEL – This fully restored hotel with its high-ceilinged parlors and grand veranda was used as a hospital during the Civil War and is now a museum dedicated to that era. View exhibits of uniforms and equipment and watch historical re-enactments of battlefield medicine and the cavalry. Open year round; Monday-Saturday, 10:00 am - 4:00 pm; Sunday, 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm; closed Wednesdays. Admission is charged. Located in Gordonsville, 20 miles northeast of Charlottesville.
  • VIRGINIA DISCOVERY MUSEUM – Here is an exciting place for kids and their families to play and learn together. Hands-on exhibits include a dress-up area, a walk-in kaleidoscope, art studio and an insect terrarium. Open Tuesday - Saturday, 10:00 am -5:00 pm; Sunday, 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm; closed Mondays. Admission is charged. Handicap accessible. Located in Charlottesville.
