The Story of Ohio's history includes the movement westward by European settlers who sought a new home in North America. One chapter of that story is the establishment of a line in the wilderness called the Greenville Treaty line. Today, you can camp in this area, which is marked by a historical marker. Mohican Reservation Campground & Canoeing is strategically located along the Mohican State Scenic River just off the Wally Road Scenic Byway.
The campground lies along the Historic Greenville Treaty line, which is also the border between Holmes and Knox counties. One fourth of the camp is in Holmes County and the rest is in Knox. This is the site of an Indian Pow-Wow, which brings a taste of First Nation heritage comes alive as visitors connect with their past.
After the Battle of Fallen Timbers, the Ohio Indian tribes agreed to sign the treaty relinquishing the Ohio territory to the white man. The line stretched from Cuyahoga River to Carrolton, Kentucky. The Indian nations and General "Mad" Anthony Wayne signed the treaty on August 3, 1795 and this made way for futher settlement in Ohio.
Today, Mohican Reservation Campground & Canoeing offers campers scenic, rustic riverfront campsites, off-river sites and primitive sites. The campground is not affiliated with any Indian tribe. It is, however, a top-rated park and a member of several camping and tourism associations.
"This is the area that was the site of an Indian village governed by Chief Mohican John", said Chris Snively, manager of the camp. "Our campground is designed for the back-to-nature camper. All sites are on choice property and ample in size," added Snively. For him, the personalized service sets Mohican Reservation Campground & Canoeing apart. "If you have a special and different situation we can adapt and help with any questions. Whatever your needs may be, please do not hesitate to ask," he said.
The campground is equipped to accommodate up to 50 ft. campers and RVs. Mohican Reservation Campground & Canoeing has both underground wiring and overhead wires with a clearance of 16 ft. - high enough to accommodate even the largest vehicles. They provide water and 20, 30 and 50 amp electrical service (not always available at other campsites).
Seasonal campsite rentals are available each year in early spring. Mohican Reservation Campground & Canoeing offers more than one mile of riverfront land. "We pride ourselves in having a campground that allows the camper to enjoy the peaceful river valley. Our object is to keep a place for you and your family to relax and play together, away from the noise and strife of everyday living," said Snively. "If you do not prefer riverfront we have off-river sites."
Site fees include many amenities for which other parks normally charge additional fees, if they provide them at all. A newer feature is free wireless internet service. They also have a large projection screen, which is used for their popular movie nights. For children, a new playground was installed in 2008.
A group wanting to camp together will enjoy having their own gathering space in The Shady Secluded - an exclusive setting for group camping in a primitive area on th Mohican River. The Mohican Reservation also offers tents, tipis, camping cabins, and cozy cabins. Guests can enjoy camping in the Native Indian tipi, similar to the kind seen on TV and in the movies. They also rent tents that are set up prior to a guest's arrival. Other options are the "bare bones" camping cabins located off the river. These have a small loft and refrigerator along with seating, electric lighting, small overhang porch with a charcoal grill, picnic table and fire pit. The cozy river cabins sleep four to six people and have a shower, toilet, sink, microwave, toaster, coffeemaker and ceiling fan. They have a deck overlooking the river with fire ring, charcoal grill and picnic table.
Mohican Reservation Campground & Canoeing is open from April 1 though Nov. 1. For information about rates, packages, special events, canoeing and other river adventures, as well as maps, directions and information about the Camping Club, see their web site below. Several major credit cards accepted.
