Things to See and Do Around
Grants, New Mexico!

- Your 1st day will be a cultural experience. Acoma Sky City is the oldest continually inhabited community in the United States. See their newly constructed Cultural Center, then take the tour of the Acoma heritage site atop a lofty mesa with an Acoma guide and get their story of life and history. Then cool off at Sky City Casino.
- Day 2 is best at El Morro National Monument and the El Malpais. See petroglyphs by ancestral Puebloans, inscriptions by Spanish explorers in the 1600s, and later the American Army at El Morro. Then stop at the Ice Cave and El Malpais Monument where you can walk among the lava flows and other geological features that are older than dirt. Photography, sightseeing and wildlife scenic opportunities abound. Then return to the KOA for relaxation in the cool desert evening.
- The next day trip begins at the Uranium Mining Museum in Grants for a self-guided tour of a full-scale model of a mine. Then it’s off to the eastern edge of El Malpais where lava flowed up to sandstone bluffs. You can see much with a short walk from your car or there are trails for the more adventurous into El Malpais Conservation Area.

- Then it’s Chaco Canyon on the 4th day. You will need all day at least for Chaco Canyon, 80 miles north of Grants KOA. Your first stop should be the Visitor Center with museum, information desk, and gift shop, then 9 miles of paved road loop through five major Chacoan sites - the largest ancient pueblo sites in the southwest.
- Save the Zuni Mountain Tour for the 5th day.
- Pick up a free guide in our office. This guide details 18 points of interest in the Zuni Mountains where logging communities once thrived at the turn of the 21st century. You will want to picnic in the shade of ponderosas. Spring flowers and wildlife abound for those into nature and the mountains. You will need a half day and a high clearance vehicle even on a dry lazy summer day.
